 Benano - Umbria - Italy
Available for weekly and month-long rental, a typical Italian stone village house on three levels built into an old fortress wall, approximately forty-five square meters with one bedroom and two and a half baths. Ideal for two.

Although this home is over 900 years old, it is up-to-date yet clearly characteristic. Fireplace in the cozy kitchen, central heating, satellite TV, wifi, and private entry just next to the mostly silent church. No cooling necessary during hot summer days--some walls are almost a meter thick. Wood beamed and tiled ceilings and rustic tiled floors. Friendly Italian neighbors and almost no tourists. The chatter in the small piazza on summer evenings ceases punctually at 10, or maybe 10.30. After all, this is the Italy where punctual is understood in the context of slow, wait-a-moment rural rhythms.

The location is Benano, a part of Orvieto, the most spectacular hill town in central Italy. As an outpost along the Pope's alternative route from Rome to France and beyond, Benano is in the Umbrian countryside, Italy's green heart, and features easy access to the major cities, towns and sights that are the essence of Italy. For those who like water, Lake Bolsena is clear and clean and twenty minutes down the road. The sea and beaches are about an hour away. Rome is just an hour and a quarter by car, about the same by train. Florence is an hour and a half, a little more by train.

To visualize this home, the house is modestly furnished for practical living. There is an entry hall with full bath at ground level. First level, kitchen with all you need for home cooking. Second level lounge, bedroom and half bath.

Bring your toothbrush and seasonally appropriate clothing, and then discover what it means to live in Italy as an Italian. Meet the bread truck, most days at ten in the morning. A full grocery and essentials vendor appears on Fridays about noon. Or get in the car and make endlessly enjoyable day trips as the tourist inside you says get out and explore.

Practical details. Rental price depends upon the season. There is a deposit to cover extraordinary gas, electric and cleaning costs as well as loss or damage for extended stays. Walking a short distance (25 meters?) from the parking area and climbing stairs are required. There is no public transportation to speak of. No Italian necessary but trying a phrase or two is much appreciated by the neighbors. Some roosters crowing in the distance and a few dogs barking. Otherwise very peaceful.
